niraj from boston: Review: An Area of Darkness

Sure, sure, sure. But here's the thing. India is a land of contradictions. Perhaps it always will be. I've been to Delhi twice: once as a child in in '89 and again in '07. The change was astounding. Highways, western brands, and a plethora of new and modern cars (the cherished yet ancient ambassador was now a rare site!) sprang out of no where, and everyone seemed to have a cell phone. Yet the poverty, slums, and general chaos that is India remained. Who knows what the next 20 years will hold? BTW, have you read "River of Gods"?

Yes, I agree it is a land of contradictions, but so is the United States. While latter has carved out a national identity for itself; its citizens know what it is to be an American. Do Indians know what it is to be Indian? I personally don't know, but I bet if you take a survey of 100 hundred Indians you will get 100 different answers.

On the other hand, India has made a mighty economic leap, but this success is only recent (not even 20 years), but in many cases, India is yet to catch up. It's safe to say that India is on the right track, but it has ways to go.

I haven't heard of 'River of Gods'? Is it any good? Please tell me about it. I've saved it on my Amazon wish list.
